a tech lesson
What an adventure in computer security the last 24 hours have been.
It all started last Friday when I accepted a Zone Alarm update and it was different than my previous one so I had to re-install. . I thought I was secure with the new trial version, but alas was not. Yesterday I got the horrible malware System Fix. I knew it was fishy (the icons were wonky like a fake Mickey Mouse just doesn’t look right), but it had done its thing and so I immediately went offline and tried to figure out how to get the thing off.
Thank you to my friend and business partner Kenny B for his moral support as I figured out what to do next.
All client sites were backed up (thank goodness) as well as other important work and personal documents. I do this on a regular basis (for music & photos too). That little external harddrive was my saviour. I have a bunch of stuff also on my server, but it is so good to know I have a back-up right at hand.
Now I am doing one final big scan and things should be back to normal, but even better as I have a better understanding of my system. I am exhausted though! I didn’t get much sleep and my head and eyes are sore from so much computer time and stress. I still have a few things to buy for Christmas and lost all this time making sure Mr Jones (the name of my computer) was OK.
I am off to hit the lines. I will listen to soothing music on my iPod and escape into the hustle and bustle.
